INEC urged to be cautious of conflicting court orders

The National Chairman of the National Unity Party (NUP), Chief Perry Opara, has said conflicting court orders will not augur well for future elections and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be vigilant in handling court orders.

Opara, who is also the Secretary General of Inter Party Advisory Council of Nigeria (IPAC), stated this yesterday in Abuja.

He said INEC had so far demonstrated leadership and capacity in delivering credible elections in 2019.

“But I am afraid that if court orders are not checked and harmonised, all the good efforts of INEC to give Nigerians free and fair election in 2019 will become a mirage.”

He said a good case in point was the Anambra Central Senatorial District election in which separate judgements were passed, including one from a High Court which said a certificate of return be given to a complainant and another from an Appeal Court which ordered the commission to conduct a fresh election.
